Electric Cars Set to Become More Affordable, Says UK Transport Secretary

In a significant move toward greener transportation, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has pledged that electric vehicles (EVs) will soon be more affordable for UK consumers.

This comes after a report from The Telegraph suggesting Labour is preparing a £700 million subsidy package to support the transition to electric mobility (great news for the EVC market). While Alexander did not confirm the figure or the distribution of these numbers, she emphasized: "We will be making it cheaper for those who do want to make the switch to an electric vehicle.

Charging Infrastructure and Accessibility

Recognising that cost isn’t the only barrier to EV adoption, the government is also addressing charging challenges—especially for people without driveways. A new £25 million investment will help councils install “cross-pavement gullies” to facilitate curbside charging. Additionally, £63 million will go toward expanding EV charging infrastructure, including better signage for charging hubs along major A-roads.

At Brim Chargers we provide seamless EVC integration, thanks to the speedy installation of our 7.4 kWh charger, and our flexible charging platform that allows EVC owners to manage charging rates and control access.

Looking Ahead

According to the BBC, Electric vehicle sales in the UK are steadily rising—about 20% of new cars sold in the first half of the year were electric. However, this still falls short of the ambitious targets set ahead of the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles.

While full details of the government’s affordability plans are expected later this week, the direction is clear: a future where EVs are not just environmentally preferable, but financially viable for the average consumer.
